Butterfly on a Leaf

The early morning sun gave this butterfly a neat shadow that made getting up so early worthwhile for me. Taken during a Mid-CT Photography Meetup Group photo shoot at Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory in South Deerfield, Massachusetts.

why do we love butterflies so much?

“The butterfly's attractiveness derives not only from colors and symmetry: deeper motives contribute to it. We would not think them so beautiful if they did not fly, or if they flew straight and briskly like bees, or if they stung, or above all if they did not enact the perturbing mystery of metamorphosis: the latter assumes in our eyes the value of a badly decoded message, a symbol, a sign.”
(Primo Levi, Italian Author, Writer and Chemist, 1919-1987)
I'm glad I caught this fidgety guy!

Monarch Butterflies in Sky

There have been very few monarch butterflies around this year; because, they lay their eggs in July... but, it needs to be dry, and July was nothing but rain....and, they are about to begin their migration to Mexico... so, Magic Wings, the butterfly conservatory here in South Deerfield, MA, decided to release hundreds of them. It was quite an event. Everyone gathered to see them off ! They had the net box full; and, then some more hatched, so they put them in envelopes ! They said, they just fold their wings and quiet down because its dark ! It was so incredible seeing them fly off into the blue sky !!!

Butterfly Specimen Display

This was my entry for the 2011 MD cake show this weekend. It's not my usual "style," but I wanted to give realistic butterflies a try.
I had some trouble with drooping antennae, but a few of them remained upright. I had to do them last minute while I was setting them up, because I was afraid those thin little RI antennae would break on the ride to the agricultural center(over gravel roads and a 1 hour car trip). I'll post close-ups of a few of my favorites when I get them off my camera.

The artist's way for butterflies

I am re-reading Julia Cameron's book for our book blogging group, surrounded by butterflies, who seem to like it too.

Butterfly Award for the Most Attractive Shirt

Explore #334, 3/19/08.
Blue Morpho (Morpho peleides).
Can't say I agree with his taste in clothing, but then one of the butterflies did sneak a ride out of the enclosure on the shirt I was wearing, so I guess I won't be too critical. This was one of the two times I saw a Blue Morpho holding still with its wings open. The other time, I almost stepped on one. I'm sure that if I had, that would have made me about as popular with the staff and guests as when I helped one escape into the aviary next door. At least the birds appreciated me for providing them with a tasty morsel.
Looks good Large or Original, if you can imagine a different background. ;-)
